<p>We live in a world where the power of persuasion is of extraordinary and critical importance.  Every encounter known to mankind is an attempt to gain influence or to persuade others to our way of thinking.   Regardless of age, profession, religion, or philosophical beliefs, people are always trying to persuade each other.  We all want to be able to persuade and influence so others will listen to, trust, and follow us.    A recent study by economists found that a whopping 26% of gross domestic product was directly attributable to the use of persuasion skills in the marketplace.  Persuasion is the gas to our economy’s engine.  Think about it – 2.3 trillion dollars of our gross domestic product comes from the skills of persuasion and influence.  You never see large corporations downsizing their sales forces.  Sales professionals are assets to the company, not liabilities.  Master Persuaders will always find employment, even in the slowest of  economies.</p>
<p>The ability to persuade is power, for good or for bad.  Think of all the people in your life who have persuaded you to reach higher and achieve greatness.  Persuasive people keep kids off drugs, prevent wars, and improve lives.  Persuasive people also get kids on drugs, stir up wars, and destroy lives.  We want to focus on the power of persuasion for the improvement and betterment of ourselves, our friends and families, and our communities.  Let’s face it, though: Most of us are not born persuaders.  For the majority of us, the arts of persuasion and influence are not gifts we inherently possess.  Sure, there are the stereotypical persuaders who are naturally friendly, outgoing, and loud.  Research reveals, however, that some of the best persuaders are actually introverts.</p>
<p>For many, the notion of becoming a Master Persuader means being forceful, manipulative, or pushy.  Such an assumption is dead wrong.  Tactics like these might get results for the short term, but Magnetic Persuasion is about getting results for the long term. With persuasion, there is no compromising as there is in negotiation. Rather, the other party willfully and enthusiastically abandons their position to embrace yours.</p>
<p>This abandonment is not brought about by manipulation because the other party clearly sees the gains and advantages of doing business with you. Negotiation, on the other hand, is a process of give and take. It&#8217;s being able to overcome objections on both sides of an issue and ultimately reaching some common ground. While persuasion is the ultimate ideal, anytime any one of us is presenting our ideas, the other party is often equally committed to their own convictions, thus making negotiation the next best path. Often when we hear the word &#8220;negotiation,&#8221; we think of a complex deal going on in the business world.</p>
<p>In reality, however, all of us are involved in multiple negotiation processes every day. For example, when you want steak but your spouse wants lasagna, you may banter back and forth about why one is better than the other. In the end, however, you end up going to a place that offers a bit of both. In that instance, you may not have thought of yourself as negotiating, but that&#8217;s really what it was. Negotiation is so common in day-to-day life that you must master the skills of great negotiators to become a Master Persuader.</p>
<p><strong>Negative Associations with Negotiation</strong><br />
While persuasion is what most of us are striving for, cooperative negotiation can yield win-win situations and should not be overlooked. In the previous example in which the spouses were trying to agree on dinner, both parties win because they end up going to a place that offers both of their dining preferences. Neither party has to compromise; both parties get what they want. When discussing negotiation in training seminars, I ask the audience what their perceptions of negotiation are. I commonly hear things like &#8220;two parties ready to fight,&#8221; &#8220;frustration,&#8221; &#8220;manipulation,&#8221; &#8220;long hours,&#8221; &#8220;deceit&#8221; and the list goes on and on. Despite what my audience members might suggest, there are only four true outcomes to negotiation: win-win, no deal, lose-lose or win-lose. The problem is that too often we get stuck in the mindset that negotiation is a game like football. That is, we think there has to be a clear-cut winner and loser. That mentality, however, does not reflect real negotiation. The truth is, everyone can win in a negotiation setting. If we want to use a sports analogy, a better one would be tandem parachuting. Tandem parachuting is where two people jump together, sharing the same parachute. In this sport, like in negotiation, you are in it together, you work together, and when you land safely, everybody wins. If you don&#8217;t, everyone loses!</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Hello  persuaders.  I hope this week is treating you well and business is  picking up for you.  I know persuasion will help you increase your  business and income.  There are two ways to double your income.   You  can work twice as hard or double your persuasion skills.  One thing you  can do is master FITD.  We all hate to get No after a presentation, when  we can enhance our influence skills and get the YES.  What we are  finding is if lots of people are saying no – you are asking too much.   Break down what you are asking into smaller pieces.</p>
<p><img class="alignleft size-full wp-image-24" style="margin: 10px;" title="No Into Yes" src="http://kurt.stratagemmarketing.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/03/no_into_yes.jpg" alt="Turning A No Into A Yes Free Training From Kurt Mortensen" width="150" height="150" />An  interesting study involved testing to see if college students would get  up early to take part in a 7:00 a.m. study session on thinking  processes.  For one group, the students were asked if they would  participate in a study on thinking processes at 7:00 a.m. on Saturday.    Of these students, only 24% agreed to participate. For the second  group, instead of asking one big question, the request was broken down  into smaller questions.<br />
Will you participate in a study on thinking processes? (YES)</p>
<p>Are you available on Saturday? (YES)</p>
<p>It is at 7:00 a.m., will you be there?  (YES)</p>
<p>What  do you think happened?  The compliance rate went from 24% to 56%.  This  was done by breaking down the initial request into smaller requests.   When an individual complies a first time, they perceive themselves to be  helpful.  If they are asked to comply a second time in an even greater  way, they are likely to consent.  In an effort to maintain consistency  with the first impression and with their own self-perception, they agree  to give even more of themselves.</p>
<p>I  hope you can grasp how this works.  What is the bottom line?   If you  are continually getting a no – you need to ask something that is  simpler, smaller or easier to understand.  Learn to ask questions that  get a YES.  Of all the tools in your persuasion toolbox, questioning is probably the one most often used by Master Persuaders.  Simple questions gain immediate involvement.   Neil Rackham and John Carlisle observed hundreds of negotiators in  action in an attempt to discover what it takes to be a top negotiator.   Their key finding was that skilled negotiators ask more than two times as many questions  as average negotiators.  The questions they ask are simple, easy to  understand and take little mental energy to answer.</p>
<p>Implement  this skill today.  It can be that simple.  If at any point in your  presentation you are getting that dreaded no – break the request or  question into smaller questions and you will see an increase in your  favorite word &#8211; YES.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>As you know I spend time interviewing your prospects after they have lied to you.  I get to find out why they said no, and what they really thought of you.  One of the big complaints is how you handled their objections or concerns.  You came across as condescending or made them feel stupid.  I know you did not mean to do this, but now we need to talk about reality.</p>
<p><img class="alignleft size-full wp-image-14" style="margin: 10px;" title="psychology of objections" src="http://kurt.stratagemmarketing.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/03/psychology_of_objections.jpg" alt="The Psychology Of Objections - Kurt Mortensen" width="173" height="250" />Many persuaders (without realizing it) show  tension, uneasiness, or irritation when someone brings up an objection.  Usually this unrealized conduct occurs because objection stirs up the  persuader&#8217;s own insecurities (often fear of failure or fear of  rejection). The persuader thinks to him or herself, &#8220;Didn&#8217;t I go over  that already? I&#8217;m doing a good job explaining things! Why is this person  still not convinced? Why am I bombing this persuasive encounter? Do I  sound like an idiot?&#8221; As understandable as this reaction is, it will  only makes things worse.</p>
<p>Your audience will sense your uneasiness and feel  even more uncomfortable. Don&#8217;t set off more alarm bells than are already  ringing! When you are handling objections it is time to check your ego  at the door.  It is about them and persuading them to do what you want them to do.  Don&#8217;t act (or think) you are put out or that is a dumb question.  Remember  &#8211; this is the first time they have voiced their objection to you, (even  though you have heard it 100 times before), show them the common  courtesy and respect just like the first time you heard that objection.</p>
<p>A calm, natural demeanor opens the door to  persuasion and will keep it open in the face of objections. Remember:  your audience cannot feel at ease if you don&#8217;t. They cannot feel relaxed  if you aren&#8217;t. They won&#8217;t be enthusiastic if you aren&#8217;t showing  enthusiasm yourself. In a very real way, you must create what you want  them to feel.  You must keep the door open for them to ask questions or voice concerns.  It goes back to our school days.  When  we ask a question and teacher makes us feel stupid or uneasy (whether  they meant it or not) the door is slammed shut for additional questions,  concerns or comments.</p>
<p>When you get an objection, keep the door open and check your ego at the door.  You could say&#8230; that is a great question.  I&#8217;m sorry I should have addressed that better.  This will keep the doors open to persuasion without having them mentally shut down.  Even if you already explained it, you should be accountable to them for not understanding your presentation.  When you handle an objection the wrong way, you will come across as arrogant or condescending.  When  you get an objection or question this week, try to posture your  response to leave the door open for additional questions or objections.</p>
